Being a teenager in today's world is tough. Teenagers are faced with social and academic pressures, along with uncertainties about the future. Sometimes it becomes too much, and a student may consider ending it all. This has unfortunately been happening throughout the whole history which is a complex issue that needs support and awareness.

"According to the Center for Disease Control, suicide rates for those between the ages of 10-24 increased 62% from 2007 to 2021, and suicide was the third leading cause of death of those between the ages of 15-24 in 2021."

Several factors can contribute to teenage suicides. Some of the new determinants include increased social media use, cyberbullying, academic pressure, mental health issues, and lack of access to proper support systems. Addressing these factors and providing resources to help teenagers navigate these challenges and promote their well-being is important.

By understanding the factors that contribute to teen suicides, people out there in the world can become more aware of the challenges young people face and the importance of mental health. This knowledge can help promote empathy, compassion, and support for teenagers who may be struggling. It also allows us to advocate for better mental health resources and create a safer environment for young people.

A person who is considering suicide might exhibit a change in attitude or behavior, such as speaking or moving with unusual speed or slowness. Their health can have depression, substance use problems, bipolar disorder schizophrenia, personality traits of aggression, mood changes, poor relationships, conduct disorder, or anxiety disorders. Their behaviors may signal risk, especially if related to a painful event, loss, or change which are increased use of alcohol or drugs, sleeping too much or too little, isolation from family and friends, etc. Suicide often displays one or more of the following moods: depression, anxiety, loss of interest, and irritability.

Orlando Estrada-Ruiz is a biology teacher for La Junta Jr/Sr High School who shared his honest opinions. “As a teacher, I know that every student expresses themselves differently. Signs that a student may be at risk of suicide include sudden behavior change, social withdrawal, hopelessness, and depression. These red flags signal that the student might be struggling and need help."

“To support students with mental health challenges or suicidal thoughts, teachers can create a safe environment by actively listening, showing empathy, and offering reassurance. Schools must educate students on teenage suicide, raise awareness about the issue, and support at-risk students through programs and discussions on mental health and suicide prevention.”

“Our school has policies to identify and help students in crisis, with staff trained to respond effectively. Our school provides resources to support students dealing with mental health issues or suicidal tendencies. We have counselors and a district social worker who can provide guidance and external resources when necessary.”

If you, or anyone you know, is struggling, remember that you are not alone. There are many resources and people available to help.
