La Junta Primary School Teacher Receives Economic Literacy Colorado’s 2024 Koelbel Enterprising Teacher of the Year Award

DENVER–May 9, 2024–Economic Literacy Colorado announced today, during Teacher Appreciation Week, that La Junta Primary School teacher Diana Remick has been named the 2024 Koelbel Enterprising Teacher of the Year. This 37th annual recognition acknowledges exemplary teaching of economic or personal financial education, which provides students with essential skills to use in their personal, professional and civic lives.

An elementary teacher for 27 years, Remick incorporates real world experiences through hands-on learning and differentiated instruction while meeting multiple content standards.

“Financial literacy instruction helps students make informed and responsible choices throughout their lives,” said Remick. “The [curricula] allows students to determine how they will earn money, pay bills and fines, and spend money. They determine the jobs needed to run the classroom effectively and complete job applications.”

This Koelbel Enterprising Teacher of the Year award is named in honor of Buz and Sherri Koelbel, longstanding supporters of Economic Literacy Colorado and the teaching of economics and personal finance to teachers and students. The recognition of exemplary teachers like Remick is precisely what they had in mind when they lent their name to this award in 2016.

“It’s never too early to create a foundation of financial understanding and Diana’s commitment to teaching these crucial skills to kids at an early age means her students are already set up for a future of stability and security,” said Amy Sherman, president and CEO of Economic Literacy Colorado. “Economic Literacy Colorado would not be able to fulfill its mission without teachers like Diana and we are so grateful for her dedication to her students and community.”

Remick will be recognized at Economic Literacy Colorado’s fundraising event in October. Accompanying the recognition is a $2,000 cash award.
