Former Bent County Sheriff Deputy Arrested for Felony Assault in California

According to the Riverside County Jail Information Management System, Bent County Deputy Ryan Sellin was arrested for Felony Battery with Serious Injury by the Murrieta Police Department on May 22, 2024 and is being held at the Southwest Detention Center on a $250,000 Bond.

According to Bent County Commissioner Kim MacDonnell, two Bent County Deputies were on route to transport an inmate from California, she said she could not speak to whether or not they were on duty when the incident occurred, however she verified that they had not picked up the inmate for transport prior to the incident.

We spoke with Bent County Sheriff Jake Six Regarding the Arrest of Off-Duty Bent County Deputy Sellin as he was in California to review the charges and case files against Deputy Sellin.

It is being investigated by authorities in California, according to Six. He said, "Everything we will do is administrative action against the deputy for off-duty actions... If a deputy screws up and they're not anywhere near us there's not a lot we can do. We're on the employment side not the criminal side..."

"We're here to do an administrative investigation into his employment, and the criminal side is done by California... He was off duty, and there will be action taken or risk to employment for off-duty antics."

"If employees would stop screwing up, I wouldn't be in California," Six said.

"I don't really know what to release because we've never had an incident like this, where they're off-duty I don't really know what to do."

"They told us it's an active criminal investigation, and I can come review the file, but they weren't going to release it even to me. I'm here to review it, decide what to do with his employment, and then hopefully come back."

According to a text update from Sheriff Six, Sellin is now considered a former deputy.
