16TH JUDICIAL DISTRICT PROBATION TO HOST FREE Narcan® TRAINING

First Responders, Law Enforcement, and Community Agencies Welcome

La Junta, CO – First responders and community members are invited to a Narcan® “Train the Trainer” event on Monday, June 10, 2024, from 9:00 – 10:30 am at the Otero College Student Center Ballroom, 2001 San Juan Avenue in La Junta. The training, hosted by the 16th Judicial District Probation Department will include how to administer Narcan® Nasal Spray, addressing the fentanyl crisis, community engagement, training materials, and on-going community support. Free Narcan® kits will be available, as well as certificates of training upon request.

Training will be presented by Rick Brandt, Chief of the Evans Police Department in Evans, Colorado. Chief Brandt has trained officers from over 225 police departments and sheriff’s offices and serves on a number of statewide substance use coalitions. He holds a master’s degree in criminal justice and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

The training is offered through a grant from Signal, the region’s Managed Service Organization, and the Bureau of Justice Administration (BJA) to provide Narcan® and training to first responders and law enforcement in the region. The grant is part of the national Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP), developed as part of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) legislation.

David Book, Chief Probation Officer for the 16th Judicial District Probation Department stated, “It is important to understand that the opioid crisis impacts all members of the community and includes children and young adults – who may accidentally get hold of a fentanyl-laced product or who are experimenting for the first time. Fentanyl is deadly and we are trying to do everything possible to prevent a tragic death when we have the means to save a life.”

“First responders and law enforcement are essential partners in this fight to save lives, as they are on the front line and often first on the scene in an overdose situation,” Officer Book added. “It’s also important for the community to be prepared to respond to an emergency, and that’s why we’re including them in this training, as well.”

Seating is limited and registration is required. To request additional information and a registration link, please contact David Book david.book@judicial.state.co.us or Troy Bowman at tbowman@signalbhn.org.
