On Friday June 14, 2024, The Crowley County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the La Junta Police Department who was investigating shooting incidents from the previous evening. La Junta Police told us that one of the suspects in those shootings may be in located in Ordway. I cannot disclose why he was believed to be in Ordway but just that investigative techniques indicated he may be within a few blocks of 4th and Colorado in Ordway.

We immediately began patrolling that area and launched an investigation to try and determine if he was in fact in our area, and if so exactly where he was located.  I must weigh public safety issues along with the real possibility of this young man being tipped off we were looking to capture him. If he was in Ordway and became aware of us looking for him, he might react in a way that could place many people in danger. Since we still were not sure if he was here and if so exactly where he was at. I decided to have my dispatch center post on social media a brief description of this juvenile asking the public to stay clear of him and to contact the Sheriff’s Office if he was seen.  My deputies and I went door to door in the area advising people of what we were doing and gave out a description of who we were looking for. I had several comments on social media complaining that we did not release his name.  In most instances we cannot release much information on Juveniles.

A couple of hours into our investigation I was able pinpoint this young man’s location within a residence in Ordway. We established a perimeter around the residence to try and contain him in as small an area as we could. A reverse 911 call was sent out to notify residents to shelter in place.  I had area fire departments block off roadways around this residence and we established an inner perimeter of Sheriff’s Office staff and La Junta Police Officers. Once we felt the area was secure, I made contact with the juvenile via cellphone and got him to exit the house and surrender.  The juvenile was taken into custody by La Junta Police Department and transported to La Junta. No injuries were sustained to officers, the juvenile or the public.
