Colorado State Trooper Injured in Fatal Highway 36 Shootout

Officer Involved Shooting in Adams County

(Westminster, COLO) – This afternoon, at approximately 1:18 p.m., a Trooper of the Colorado State Patrol, was in his marked patrol vehicle in the center median on Highway 36 eastbound, just west of Federal Blvd.

While in the vehicle, a car drove past and shot several rounds at the Trooper, with a single round striking the Trooper.  The car proceeded to pull over on the inside shoulder, the gunman exited the vehicle with a firearm and began to fire additional rounds at the windshield of the patrol vehicle.  The Trooper exited his vehicle with his rifle and fired, shooting the gunman.  The gunman was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the Trooper was transported to an area hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and once further information is available, it will be added to the release. 

Highway 36 is currently closed for an extended amount of time for investigation.  Check on COTrip.org for up to date road closure information.
