On July 29, 2024, Valley View-Hillcrest Cemetery in Rocky Ford was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The public is invited to attend a presentation explaining the project to document and nominate the Cemetery and what it means going forward.

Valley View-Hillcrest Cemetery: National Register Nomination and Untold Stories Related to Japanese Americans in Otero County.

Presentation By: Rebecca Goodwin, Kathleen Corbett, Ph.D., Jane Daniels

• The history of the Cemetery and its relationship to national cemetery design movements

• The process of National Register Listing

• The Translation of Kanji (Japanese writing) on headstones • The development of Untold Stories relating the remarkable lives of Japanese-Americans buried at the Cemetery.

Projected funded by a grant from History Colorado-State Historical Fund.

A collaborative project of the Otero County History Preservation Board (CLG) and The City of Rocky Ford.
