Crowley County Sheriff Letter to the Community Regarding Ordway Service Contract

To the citizens of Ordway, Colorado:

On September 19, 2024, I posted a letter to inform the citizens of Ordway of my position on a news story aired by FOX news.  Now I find that KBLJ radio has been airing a similar story claiming I have discontinued Law Enforcement services to the town of Ordway. I have demanded a retraction be aired as the story is totally false. 

I now believe it is time to let the people know what has led up to this story being published. 

By Colorado statute municipalities are required to provide law enforcement services to their citizens unless contracted with the sheriff to provide that service. 

A contract did exist between the town of Ordway and the Sheriff, to provide law enforcement services and that contract expired at the end of 2023. 

All attempts to negotiate a new contract have failed. 

All efforts by me to communicate with the town have been met with silence.

I have decided that the town of Ordway and I have reached an impasse. I have sent a letter to the town dissolving all contracts that existed between us. 

This decision was not made lightly and will cost me a substantial portion of my operating funds, but it had become apparent to me that I would have to give into values I cannot support.

I hope that the town of Ordway lives up to its obligations and provides the services it is required by statute to provide, but I have no control over that. 

I WILL continue to provide the same services I have in the past until such time as Ordway takes over, if and when they decide to do so. 

I welcome all questions and concerns and apologize for my failure in making this relationship work with the town of Ordway. I will continue to provide services equally to all regardless of outside pressures and will provide the best service I can with what I have.
