Obituary

Dr. Wanda Gloria (Miskowiec) Girard, M.D., passed away, peacefully, in her home on September 25th, 2024. A devout Christian, and member of the La Junta Catholic Parishes; she was a long-time resident of La Junta, Colorado.

A beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother; Wanda was born August 31, 1930 to Josephine (Gonzales) and Dr. Adalbert Miskowiec, M.D., in La Jara, Colorado.

She grew up in Pagosa Springs and graduated from Pagosa Springs High School in 1948.

She attended University of Colorado, Boulder and University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver; graduating in 1952 and 1955 respectively. She met her husband, Dean L. Girard, while attending medical school and they were married June 20, 1955. She practiced medicine and anesthesia in La Junta, and worked with clinics for the indigent until the arrival of her first child in 1957. She later worked as a Medical Officer and Director for the Otero County Health Department. She retired in October 1990.

Wanda loved to travel with family and friends. Her travels took her throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Wanda had many friends and neighbors. She was an active member of the Marie Coterie Circle and enjoyed playing bridge until limited mobility and failing eyesight restricted her activities.

She was a long-time member of PEO Chapter W and enjoyed get-togethers with her “lunch bunch."

She is survived by her children, Michele Girard, Clayton Girard, Stephanie Hertzog, Denise Girard, Phillip Girard, and David Girard; grandchildren, Joe and Gabrielle Girard; cousin, nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grandnieces also survive. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dr. Dean L. Girard, M.D. FACS, and sister, Dr. Olga (Philip) Eaton, M.D. We lovingly commend her to God.

The family wishes to thank Arkansas Valley Hospice for the supportive care we have received.
