Impaired Driver Arrested After Fatal Collision with Officers at Golden Crash Scene

Two Officers Struck while Working a Crash Scene

Officer information to be released by Golden Police Department

(Golden, CO) - On November 6, 2024, the Colorado State Patrol arrested suspect Stephen Robert Geer (43), He was charged with the following:

  • Vehicular Homicide - While Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or One or More Drugs or Both Such Conduct was the Proximate Cause of a Death to Another Person

  • Two counts of Vehicular Assault - While Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or One or More Drugs or Both Such Conduct was the Proximate Cause of Serious Bodily Injury to Another Person,

  • Failure to Exercise Due Care When Approaching a Stationary Vehicle Resulting in Death (Felony, Move Over Law),

  • and drove vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both.

Golden Police officers were working a property damage crash on Highway 58 just east of Washington Avenue in Golden. This section of roadway is an overpass that is curved. There was one officer staged in a police cruiser before the crash scene and two additional officers managing the crash site when a passing vehicle entered the scene. Both officers at the original crash site were struck and forced under the original crashed vehicle.

One of the officers was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries.

The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating the crash. The driver of the vehicle that struck the officers was arrested on scene for suspected impairment.
