Obituary
Taneko Monroe of Ordway passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at the age of 92 at her home surrounded by her family. Taneko was born in Sasebo, Japan. She met Cornell Monroe in 1952 while he was stationed in Japan serving in the Army. They were married in 1954 and she and Cornell traveled around the world as he served his career in the Army. Taneko became an American citizen in 1962 while they were stationed in France. She was proud to become an American citizen and happy to have met and shaken hands with Senator Homer Capehart of Indiana. In 1968 Cornell retired from the Army and they moved to Carter Lake, IA and then moved to Ordway in 1973. Taneko was a stay at home mom to her 4 children. After they all grew up and left the house she became a cook at the Crowley County Nursing Home. She was a member of the Japanese American Citizens League. She also enjoyed Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging.
Taneko is survived by her husband of 70 years Cornell Monroe, 4 children: Margaret (Greg) Dereus of Ft. Collins, Susan Monroe of Colorado Springs, Sarah Monroe of Colorado Springs, Roy (Nita) Monroe of Walsenburg, 4 grandchildren, 3 sisters: Yukio, Sanae, Harue all of Japan.
Services will be held in Indiana at a later date. Bellwood Ustick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
