La Junta Police Warn of Utility and Law Enforcement Phone Scams Targeting Residents
The La Junta Police Department has recently received reports of several phone scams.
In one of the scams, the caller pretends to be from the La Junta Utilities office and asks the customer to go to Walmart to wire money for their utilities. Please note that the La Junta Utilities office will NEVER ask a customer to wire money for their utilities. If you have any questions about your bill or a call you received, please get in touch with the Utilities Office or the La Junta Police Department.
In another scam, the caller claims to be with law enforcement and instructs you to purchase gift cards, providing them with the card numbers and security codes to avoid arrest. These calls may even "spoof" their number, making it appear they are calling from the police department. We want to emphasize that we will never ask you to purchase gift cards or send money to avoid arrest. If you have concerns about whether a call is legitimate, please feel free to hang up and call the police department back to confirm you are speaking to an actual police officer.
