Highway 550 Fatal Crash
Both directions closed
(OURAY, COLO) - April 6, 2026 at approximately 5:33 p.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 550 at milepost 103 (south of Ridgway, CO). The crash involved a Dodge Caravan and a Ford F350 hauling a trailer.
The driver of a Dodge Caravan, a 34-year old male, was pronounced dead on scene. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Ouray County Coroner once next of kin have been notified.
A 12-year-old female passenger of the Dodge Caravan was transported by air ambulance to a local area hospital. A 74-year-old female passenger of the Dodge Caravan was transported by ground ambulance to a local area hospital. Their conditions are unknown.
The driver of the Ford F350 had no report of injury.
The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. The cause of the crash has not been determined at this time.
Highway 550 is closed in both directions. It is unknown when the roadway will reopen. Motorists are encouraged to choose an alternate route. Check COtrip.org for real-time traffic updates.
