Charges Filed in I-70 Fatal Crash Involving CDOT Plow

(Clear Creek County, COLO) - The Colorado State Patrol is providing an update regarding a fatal and injury crash that happened on January 29, 2026, at approximately 8:53 a.m. on I-70 at milepost 218, in Clear Creek County, CO. The crash involved a CDOT plow and a sprinter van carrying a youth hockey team from California and two additional passenger vehicles.

The driver of the CDOT plow, Colton A. Wiedman, a 29-year-old male, has been charged with the following:

  • Careless Driving Causing Death (1 count, a Class 1 Traffic Misdemeanor)
  • Careless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury (4 counts, each a Class 1 Traffic Misdemeanor)
  • Careless Driving Causing Bodily Injury (3 counts, each a Class 1 Traffic Misdemeanor)
  • Failure to Drive in a Designated Lane (1 count, a Class A Traffic Infraction)
