James “Jimmy” Kent Kaufman, 70, passed away on April 22, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy built on hard work, devotion, and an unwavering love for those closest to him.

Jimmy was born March 12, 1956 in Annapolis, Maryland to Ralph and Genevieve (Gause) Kaufman and later moved to Colorado Springs at a young age. Later, his parents relocated to La Junta where he graduated from La Junta High School in 1974. Jimmy later carried out his remaining years in Las Animas, Colorado.

Jimmy was a man who truly lived life through his passions. He found his greatest joy outdoors and working with his hands—whether fishing, hunting, building, or traveling—and cherished every moment spent outdoors and with his family. Above all, he loved being a father and a grandfather. His family was his pride and his purpose.

A skilled mason for most of his life, Jimmy was known as one of the best in his community. His work can be found throughout the valley, each project a reflection of his dedication, craftsmanship, and pride in working with his hands. He worked hard for everything he had and took immense satisfaction in building something lasting—not just in stone, but in the lives he touched.

Jimmy was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back. He was genuine, strong, and steady—the foundation, the brick, of his family. His presence was one of reliability and love, and his impact will continue to be felt for generations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Genevieve “Jenny” Kaufman.

He is survived by his son, Tybre Kaufman and his wife Kayla Kaufman, and their children, Westley and Eli Kaufman; his daughter, Bailee Goodwin and her husband Collin Goodwin, and their children, Teal, Kase, and Remi Goodwin.  Jimmy is also survived by his siblings: Kit (Fred) Winter; Vicki Kaufman; Daniel “Danny” (Sherry) Kaufman; Carol (John) Freeman; Connie (Mike) Fowler; and Pamela (Steven) Guerrero, along with many nieces, nephews, and close friends who loved him dearly. He also leaves behind his two loyal dogs, Chee and Lily, who were his constant companions and best buddies.

There are never enough moments with the people we love, and though his time here feels too short, Jimmy’s legacy will live on in the hands he helped guide, the values he instilled, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

Per the request of James’ family, cremation has taken place and a private memorial will be held at a later date.
