Richard Borrego, age 55 from Pueblo, CO was in Chaffee County District Court on April 29th, 2026, to be sentenced on charges stemming from an officer involved shooting that occurred back on January 8th, 2025 in Chaffee County.
On January 8th, 2025, Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a residence in Garfield (Chaffee County) for a report of a domestic disturbance. The suspect in the case, Borrego, barricaded in his home and refused to exit.
The Chaffee County Combined Tactical Team was called in to assist and after deploying gas into the home Borrego opened fire on the officers with a firearm he had in his possession. Officers and Deputies from the team returned fire striking Borrego but he was not mortally wounded. After several hours the team was eventually able to get Borrego to surrender.
Borrego was treated for the gunshot wound and went through several surgeries while in custody. Borrego was charged with the following:
2 Counts of Attempted First Degree Murder of a Peace Officer (Felonies), 2 Counts of Assault in First-degree (Felonies), 18 Counts of Menacing (Felonies), Prohibited use of a Weapon (Felony),
Third Degree Assault Domestic Violence (Misdemeanor) and Menacing (Misdemeanor).
Borrego was held on a $100,000.00 bond. Assisting in the case included: the Salida Police Department, Chaffee County EMS, the Chaffee County Fire Department, the Alamosa Police Department, the Alamosa County Sheriff's Office, the Buena Vista Police Department and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Borrego accepted a plea agreement pleading guilty to One Count of Attempted 2nd Degree Murder (class 3 Felony) and 3rd Degree Assault/ Domestic Violence. For the attempted murder charge, Borrego was sentenced to 15 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections followed by 3 years of parole. For the assault charge he was sentenced to 364 days that would run concurrently with the other sentence.
“We were glad to see a prison sentence in this case. The attempted murder of our county’s guardians can not be tolerated. I am personally thankful to our municipal and county leaders who funded the purchase of the teams armored vehicle several years ago that may have saved officer lives in this case. I am also grateful to the District Attorney’s Office who took a firm stance on this case to protect our officers. The intent when fire was returned was to neutralize the threat, not wound him. Borrego has been given a second chance at life by a higher authority and I hope he is able to take advantage and turn his life around. Despite being shot at, the tactical team was able to get Borrego to surrender without ending his life. This is a testament to their high level of training. I am very proud of our local responders and those that came to our aid.” -Sheriff Andy Rohrich
