**Update** Fatal Crash Closes Northbound Interstate 25
(Douglas County, COLO) - The ongoing investigation of the fatal crash on Interstate 25 near Happy Canyon Road (milepost 187), on May 15, 2026, shows that a Chevrolet Equinox was backing up on the right northbound shoulder. An Audi Q5 and a Toyota Highlander were traveling northbound in the right traffic lane. The Equinox drifted into the right lane as it backed up along the shoulder, resulting in the Audi striking the back of the Equinox, which then caused the Highlander to strike the Audi. The Equinox came to rest on the shoulder, the Audi and the Highlander came to rest on the Interstate, blocking travel.
This investigation is ongoing. The Douglas County Coroner's Office will identify the deceased driver of the Equinox, a 31-year-old male from Aurora, CO, once proper next of kin notifications have been made. The driver of the Audi, a 46-year-old female from Parker, CO, was transported to an area hospital for serious injuries. The driver of the Highlander, a 58-year-old female from Castle Pines, CO, was transported to an area hospital for moderate injuries. The highway reopened on May 15 at around 5:12 p.m.

Motorists encouraged to seek alternate route
(Douglas County, Colo) – At about 1:23 p.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to the area of northbound Interstate 25 near Happy Canyon Road (milepost 187) for a reported multi-vehicle crash.
When troopers arrived at the scene, they observed a three-vehicle rear-end crash involving a white Audi Q5, a blue Toyota Highlander, and a grey Chevrolet Equinox. The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, a 31-year-old male from Aurora, Colorado, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Toyota Highlander, a 58-year-old female out of Castle Pines, Colorado, was transported to an area hospital for an unknown extent of injuries.
Northbound Interstate 25 will be closed for an extended period of time for the crash investigation. It is unknown at this time what led to the fatal crash.
