Moffat County Sheriff’s Office Seizes Approximately 90 Bison in Animal Neglect Investigation

CRAIG, Colo. — The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, working alongside the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection and the Colorado State Veterinary Office, seized approximately 90 bison and one mule from the Lay Valley Bison Ranch in Moffat County as part of an ongoing animal neglect investigation.

According to officials, investigators spent the past month working with ranch owner Daniel Martin, 83, to address concerns surrounding the condition and care of the animals. Authorities said remediation efforts were unsuccessful, leading law enforcement and animal protection agencies to take further action to safeguard the animals’ welfare.

During the operation, one mule was found to be suffering to the extent that humane euthanasia was necessary. The euthanasia was carried out by the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities also confirmed that two bison died during the seizure process, while two additional bison were humanely euthanized to prevent further suffering.

Daniel Martin, owner of the Lay Valley Bison Ranch, is expected to face multiple misdemeanor charges related to animal cruelty. Officials emphasized that the charges are allegations and that Martin is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The seized animals are currently being evaluated and cared for in coordination with veterinary professionals and partner agencies.

The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection, the Colorado State Veterinary Office, and assisting personnel for their support during the investigation.

Officials said no additional information will be released at this time because the investigation remains ongoing.

All parties considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
