Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 2
Incident Commander Rodney Redinger

Size: 37,734 acres | Containment: 13% | Cause: Undetermined | Start Date: June 27, 2026 @ 5:33p.m.
Location: Approx. 2 miles NE of Ouray, CO | Total Personnel: 877

Safety Message: Firefighters have to be diligently aware of increased safety hazards as thunderstorm activity passes over the fire area. Many are working near or along steep and rugged terrain. High gusty and erratic winds can quickly increase fire behavior and push the fire toward them. Sudden downbursts over burned areas can initiate heavy muddy debris flows, or dislodge large boulders and single trees, causing them to roll downhill with little or no warning. It is equally important that they are aware of nearby lightning activity. As burned areas open up to the public, these same hazards, with the exception fire activity, will be prevalent under adverse weather conditions.

Current Conditions: Fire activity and smoke seen from the Hwy 550 corridor and other areas are coming from the interior of the fire perimeter as the fire moves into unburned areas. Firefighters completed all chipping operations and containment lines are holding up from the Hwy 550 corridor to Nate Creek, increasing the overall containment of the fire. Firefighters will continue to patrol and mop up around structures throughout this area.

Dozers continue to work on constructing and reinforcing indirect firelines up to the High Mesa and down to the east side of the Silver Jack Reservoir. Firefighters assigned to the structure group will be reassigned to assist other crews where they will continue to assess and implement point protection around structures. Helicopters are hauling portable water tanks to areas where water resources are inadequate to support the infrastructure for structure protection. Water tenders are transporting water to fill the tanks.

Firefighters are assessing the spot fire in the Middle Fork drainage south of Silver Jack Reservoir, seeking options to develop a plan to go direct on the fire front to keep the fire away from residences east of the reservoir. Fire activity in the Uncompahgre Wilderness is light as it moves into rock outcroppings and other natural barriers. This area is monitored regularly by aerial resources.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Moisture from the southwest continues, bringing a 40-50% chance of wetting rain over the fire. Thunderstorms are expected in the mid-afternoon and will occur off and on into the evening. Gusty winds should be lighter, with the possibility for downdrafts that can create dangerous wind shifts and turbulence. Temperatures continue to decrease, improving humidity recoveries overnight.
