Otero Foundation Board Honors Betty Velasquez for Years of Service

LA JUNTA – The Otero College Foundation Board recently honored retiring board member, Betty Velasquez, from La Junta, for her 11 years of service to the Foundation Board. Velasquez was presented with an appreciation plaque acknowledging her many years of service, including three years as the board chair.

Velasquez, a retired director of the Colorado Workforce Center, is known throughout the area for her dedication to organizations and causes that impact workforce and economic development, education, and healthcare.

Dr. Kimberly Zant, president of Otero College, has worked closely with Velasquez over the past three years since Zant first came to Otero and credits her with setting a high standard with her dedication to the Foundation.

“I have enjoyed working with Betty and am thankful for her commitment, dedication, and leadership in support of the college’s Foundation. Over the years, she has served in several capacities, but I am especially grateful for her time as Chair when I first came into the president’s role at Otero. She actively participated in college events and worked to ensure our success. I am sincerely grateful for her time and willingness to support Otero students,” said Zant.

Jim Rizzuto, Otero College Foundation chair and former president of Otero College, has spent many years working with Velasquez on numerous boards and community projects.

“I can’t say enough about Betty and her commitment to the community, students, and Otero College. She has always gone above and beyond to ensure that Otero College has the necessary human and fiscal resources to achieve its goals.  Betty is truly a servant leader who brings about positive change in many areas of our community,” said Rizzuto.
