One Dead in Beulah Flooding
Pueblo, CO - One person was killed this afternoon in Beulah after fast-moving floodwaters swept the individual downstream after heavy rain fell over the Beulah Valley and the Aspen Acres burn scar.
The man was standing outside near the intersection of Highway 78 and Central Avenue when he was caught up in the strong flood waters. Beulah fire personnel attempted to rescue him when he was quickly swept downstream.
Pueblo County Sheriff's deputies along with members of the PCSO Emergency Services Division and West Park Fire searched by ground for the victim, while the PCSO drone team and Flight for Life searched by air. A Flight for Life crew located the victim in a creek approximately two miles downstream from where he was swept away. Rescuers hiked into the victim, who was deceased.
The Pueblo County Coroner's Office will release the name of the victim and the manner and cause of death at the appropriate time,
According to the National Weather Service, radar estimated approximately 1 to 1½ inches of rain fell in the Beulah area over a 1½ hour period this afternoon. A flood watch was issued earlier in the day from noon until this evening for the Aspen Acres burn scar area. The watch issued stated that flash flooding and debris flows could result due to the excessive rainfall.
"Our hearts are heavy today as we confirm the tragic loss of life resulting from this afternoon's flooding in Beulah," said Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero. "I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family and those affected by this tragic loss."
Lucero thanked the First Responders for their efforts to rescue and locate the victim under the extremely dangerous conditions caused by the intense flooding.
With this being the beginning of monsoon season and heavy rain expected, the Sheriff's Office urges everyone to take precautions to protect themselves and their families especially since flooding around the burn-scarred terrain can escalate rapidly.
Residents are reminded to stay away from flooded roadways and waterways, move to higher ground immediately if conditions worsen, and pay close attention to emergency alerts and weather warnings.
