Community-Donated Pies Bring Sweet Surprise to Gold Mountain Fire Crews

 Yesterday, we shared how one $100 donation grew into an extraordinary community effort. Here's where some of those pies ended up.

 

Eight fresh-baked pies from Pleasant Valley made the trip up the mountain to firefighters working on the #GoldMountainFire. At the end of a long shift, we unfolded a table, uncovered the pies, broke out the whipped cream and ice cream, and waited for crews to come off the line.

 

They arrived to the make-shift parking spot in waves: wearing their yellows and sprinkled with soot. And almost all of them had the same reaction when they realized what was waiting for them:

“Is that pie?”

 

About 50 firefighters and fire personnel stopped for a large slice, topped with whipped cream and a scoop of ice cream. The ice cream may have gotten a little soft during the trip up the mountain, but judging by the empty plates, nobody seemed to mind. 🍦

There were plenty of smiles, a few surprised looks, and more than a few firefighters who decided dessert could come before dinner just this once.

But this was about more than pie.

 

Every slice represented someone in the surrounding communities who chose to support the people working on the Gold Mountain and Elk fires.

 

It represented the person who walked into Pleasant Valley and handed over a donation. The family who contributed online. The community group that pooled its money. The residents and visitors who wanted firefighters they may never meet to know that their work was seen and appreciated.

 

For firefighters who have spent long days on the line and, in many cases, weeks away from home, that kind of support matters.

 

And they noticed. Again and again, firefighters asked us to pass along the same message: Please tell the community thank you!

 

So, from the firefighters and personnel who enjoyed these pies, and from the Incident Management Teams who have been welcomed and supported throughout these incidents: thank you.

 

Thank you to Cydney and Tito at Pleasant Valley for baking, organizing, coordinating, and turning a simple idea into something much larger.

And thank you to every person, family, organization, business, resident, and visitor who contributed.

 

You didn’t just buy pie. You gave a group of tired firefighters a pretty memorable end to their shift.
