Head-On Fatal Crash Closes Highway 50

The road has been reopened

(Gunnison County) – On September 7, 2026, at about 2:22 p.m., Colorado State Patrol responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 50 near milepost 155, west of Gunnison, that was blocking the road.

Initial reports show a Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 61-year-old male from Morrison, CO, was eastbound on Highway 50 near milepost 155. A Jeep Wrangler pulling a small camper trailer, driven by a 28-year-old male from Leadville, CO, was westbound on Highway 50 at the same location. The Silverado veered into the westbound lane and struck the Wrangler head-on, causing both vehicles to spin. The Silverado came to a stop facing west. The Wrangler went off the westbound shoulder and rolled, coming to rest on its right side. The Wrangler then caught fire.

The driver of the Silverado was pronounced deceased while being airlifted to the hospital. The driver of the Wrangler was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The name of the deceased will be released by the Gunnison County Coroner once next-of-kin notifications have been made.

The road was temporarily closed for the investigation, but has since been reopened.
