(LARIMER COUNTY, COLO) - Yesterday, on October 23, 2026, at approximately 6:31 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a crash on southbound I-25 at milepost 262 (south of County Road 32), west of Windsor, Colorado. Multiple separate non-injury crashes followed from milepost 259 (Crossroads Boulevard) to milepost 262.

The first crash was a hit-and-run crash. Preliminary reports indicate a Kia Seltos was traveling southbound in the I-25 lane near milepost 262. Traffic was coming to a stop when the Kia Seltos braked and swerved into the HOV lane. A dark-colored pickup followed the Kia and struck it before fleeing the scene. The driver of the Kia, a 28-year-old female, was transported to a local area hospital without injuries.

A secondary two-vehicle crash followed approximately 15 minutes after the primary crash. Preliminary reports indicate a Hyundai Tucson, driven by a 41-year-old female, was stopped in traffic in the middle lane on Interstate 25 southbound near milepost 261. A Honda Civic, driven by a 28-year-old female, was traveling southbound in the same lane of travel. The Civic's front struck the rear of the Tucson. No injuries were reported.

The third and fourth secondary crashes followed. Preliminary reports indicate a Chevrolet Traverse, driven by a 61-year-old female, was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 near milepost 261. A Subaru Forester, driven by a 31-year-old male, was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 at the same location. The Chevrolet slowed suddenly due to stopped traffic in the middle lane. The Subaru's front struck the rear of the Chevrolet. A Mazda CX5, driven by a 34-year-old female, was traveling southbound at the same location. The Mazda entered the crash scene, and its front struck the rear of the Subaru. No injuries were reported during both crashes.

The fifth secondary crash involved three vehicles. Preliminary reports indicate a Ford Bronco, driven by a 19-year-old female, was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 near milepost 263. A Mitsubishi Outlander, driven by a 24-year-old female, and a Toyota Highlander, driven by a 30-year-old female, were traveling southbound on Interstate 25 in the same location. The Ford and Mitsubishi were slowing in the middle lane of travel. The Toyota then struck the Mitsubishi and Ford. No injuries were reported at the time of the crash.

The sixth secondary crash involved three vehicles. Preliminary reports indicate a Subaru XV, driven by a 22-year-old female, was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 near milepost 263 in the left lane of travel. A BMW 430I, driven by a 30-year-old male, was stopped in the right lane. A Honda Pilot, driven by a 31-year-old male, was stopped or slowly moving in the right lane, in front of the BMW. The Subaru attempted to avoid stopped traffic by changing lanes from the left into the right. The Subaru's front struck the rear of the BMW, pushing the BMW forward into the rear of the Honda, where they came to rest blocking the right lane of travel. The Honda moved onto the right shoulder. No injuries were reported during this crash

The seventh secondary crash involved two vehicles. Preliminary reports indicate a Honda HR-V, driven by a 49-year-old female, was attempting to merge onto southbound Interstate 25 near milepost 261.5. A Peterbilt truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer, driven by a 28-year-old male, was southbound in the right lane. The Honda changed lanes in front of the Peterbilt when it was unsafe to do so. The left rear side of the Honda collided with the right front corner of the Peterbilt. No injuries were reported.

The eighth secondary crash was a hit-and-run crash. Preliminary reports indicate a Subaru Outback, driven by an unknown-age female, was southbound on Interstate 25 near milepost 263. An unknown make and model vehicle was southbound on Interstate 25 in the same location. The unknown vehicle struck the rear of the Subaru. The vehicle then fled the scene. No injuries were reported from the driver of the Subaru.

The ninth and tenth secondary crashes followed. A Jeep Gladiator, driven by a 30-year-old male, was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 in the left Lane. A Toyota RAV4, driven by a 34-year-old male, was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 behind the Jeep. A Subaru Ascent, driven by a 38-year-old female, was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 behind the Toyota. The Toyota failed to slow, and the front struck the rear of the Jeep. The Subaru failed to slow, and the front struck the rear of the Toyota, causing the Toyota to strike the Jeep a second time. While the Subaru was stopped due to the crash, an Audi A4, driven by a 44-year-old female, failed to stop. The Audi's front struck the rear of the Subaru. No injuries were reported in either crash.

The Colorado State Patrol is leading the investigation for all separate crashes.

The right lane on southbound I-25 near milepost 261 (south of East County Road 30) and west of Windsor was closed. The roadway was reopened at approximately 8 a.m. The roadway was closed for approximately one hour and 30 minutes.

The Colorado State Patrol wants to remind drivers that following too closely is dangerous. Give yourself a buffer so that you can anticipate another vehicle stopping abruptly. I-25 traffic will continue to be crowded. It is up to drivers to make sure they leave at an earlier time to make it to their destination and be patient during rush hour traffic.
