Avoid a Real Nightmare, Plan a Sober Ride

Colorado State Patrol DUI teams are focused on locating impaired drivers

(Denver, COLO)—In addition to the Sobriety Checkpoint that will be held on Highway 119 in Golden on the morning of October 31, the Colorado State Patrol DUI Task Force Teams and partner law enforcement agencies will conduct increased patrols over the Halloween weekend. Two special DUI Teams will concentrate resources on October 30 and October 31 in the following counties: Adams, Jefferson, and Gilpin. This operation focuses on deterring impaired driving on major traffic arteries and feeder roads in the area. While impaired driving will be the focus, we will address any dangerous driving behavior observed or reported.

Last year, on the Friday and Saturday of Halloween weekend, troopers around the State arrested 62 impaired drivers and responded to 21 crashes. Halloween was the top holiday for DUI arrests made by the Colorado State Patrol. Looking at 2026 DUIs handled by the Colorado State Patrol, year to date, there have been 612 arrests and 326 crashes involving impaired driving in these same three counties targeted for this enforcement operation; three crashes were fatal, and 88 resulted in injuries.

This special operation is dedicated to stopping impaired driving "in its tracks" to save lives. State troopers will focus on the detection and apprehension of drivers who may be impaired by or otherwise under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or a combination of these substances. The worst way to start the year is getting a DUI.

We ask the public to help report suspected impaired drivers. Avoid the suspected driver by getting out of the way. Then, contact the Colorado State Patrol after you pull over by calling *CSP (*277) or 9-1-1. Be prepared to provide the following information: vehicle description, license plate number, location and direction of travel, driver description, and the driving behavior being demonstrated. All emergency calls can be made to 9-1-1.

Participating Agencies

Black Hawk Police Department

Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office

Troopers continue to take a low-tolerance approach to the top fatal crash factors, including impaired driving. The Colorado State Patrol reminds motorists to plan for a sober ride, drive at the speed limit, and maintain their lane position based on the current driving conditions.
