Officers in the La Junta Police Department donated $1,135 to the La Junta Parks and Recreation Department after extending their annual fundraiser. Initially, officers could donate to keep their beard during the month of November.

Typically officers must be clean shaven per dress code, so it is a particularly popular fundraiser, according to La Junta Police Chief Quick, who went on to say that the fundraiser was extended through Leap Day 2024.

LJPD Officers including Chief Todd Quick, Sargent Anthony Avila, Officer Ryan Shelefontiuk, new K9 Officer Oden and his handler, Corporal Carlos Triana met with La Junta Parks and Rec Director Brock Hinkhouse to present the over-sized check that will be utilized to help fund La Junta's Park and Rec programs.

Hinkhouse said the Parks and Rec Department plans to use the funds towards lowering or waving youth registration fees.

Donations primarily fund the La Junta Police Department K9 Program.

The city of La Junta provides Corporal Triana's salary and patrol car, and we rely on donations for Officer Oden's health care, food and equipment.

If anyone would like to donate to the LJPD K9 Program, call either Corporal Triana or Chief Quick at (719) 384-2525.
