First Responders VS Bent County Purgatoroire River Wildfire

According to Bent County Sheriff Jake Six, over 30 agencies are assisting is containing the nearly thousand acre riverbottom wildfire that started near Hwy 101 and the Boggsville Historic Landmark on Saturday morning.

All evacuation orders have been lifted, no structures were lost and there were no injuries, according to Sheriff Six. Residents who were previously evacuated should remain on standby as the fire has not been contained.

Numerous members of the public asked SECO News if there were multiple fires, Sheriff Six confirmed that it was a single fire.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Update 3/14/2024: With the recent moisture we can officially say that the fire is 100% contained. In total it burnt 1,084 acres with zero structures lost. We would like to thank every department that showed up to help and our community that helped to support us all! 

Update 3/4/2024 10:08am: The Fire is 90% contained. There are a few crews still working some areas of the fire. Thank you all for your continued support!

Update 3/3 18:50pm: All pre evacuations have been lifted

Update 3/3 14:25pm: At this time the Boggsville Fire remains at 1,030 acres and is 80% contained. The sections of the fire that jumped the river on the northside of the river were rapidly suppressed by fire crews. 

Fire Crews are currently suppressing hotspots and reinforcing fire breaks on all sides of the fire with the exception of the north side, which is being held by the inaccessible Arkansas River.

Update 3/3 10:00: Fire remains the same at 1,030 acres. Fire crews are working to establish fire lines and are continuing to monitor watching for high winds. All highways are open County road 13-15 is still on pre evacuation.

Update 20:37: Fire is at 1,030 acres with 0% containment. 

Update 19:27pm: Multiple agencies are still on scene watching the fire for the night. The others are headed home to get some much needed rest in order to return tomorrow when fire operations will continue.

Update 18:59pm: All evacuations have been lifted but are still on pre evacuation. The fire remains at 831 acres with 0% containment. 

Update 1530pm: Fire has grown to 831 acres with 0% containment. 

Update 13:30pm: Fire is over 470 acres with 0% containment. 

Update 13:11pm: Fire is still rapidly progressing. All residents that live on the south side hwy 50 from BFI to Fort lyon are under evacuation also. 

Update 11:59pm: The fire has burned approximately 246 acres with 0% containment

Update: evacuations are in place for East of Las animas and Fory Lyon. Multiple agencies are on scene

Fire crews are working a fire near boggsville on 101. Hwy 101 is closed. Please use caution and stay away from the area to let fire crews work.
