Bent Historical Society Thanks First Responders for Protecting Boggsville

Boggsville Historic Site and Bent County Historical Society would like to extend a huge heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the many first responders who helped fight the “Boggsville Fire”:  the many responding fire departments, Bent County Sheriff’s Department, Bent County Road and Bridge Crew, Colorado State Patrol, CDOT, Bent County Ambulance Service, community members who furnished equipment, food and drinks, and any others I have failed to mention.

A few more “Thank yous” are in order to others who were instrumental in the successful defense of Boggsville Historic Site during the Boggsville Fire. Thank you to Bill Long, Pat Karney, City of Las Animas and Bent County Road & Bridge crew!  Several years ago we began a site fire mitigation program to remove weeds and invasive Elm trees that had overtaken the area surrounding the historic houses.

Three years ago, Bill Long took responsibility for the project.  In the past three years, Bill has volunteered over 1,000 hours of his time and donated over 500 equipment hours using his own tractor and equipment to complete the project just recently.  Pat Karney donated tire repair when the tractor encountered unseen hazards in the overgrowth.

The City of Las Animas awarded grants to Boggsville to cover the cost of fuel for the tractor and chain saw, and chain saw repairs. Bent County Road & Bridge Crew moved some of the very large trees for us.

Thanks to the support of these folks, the firetrucks and heavy equipment were able to access the edge of the river to grade fire breaks and to fight the fires at the river bank rather  than having to wait until the fire advanced close to the houses.  Thank you Bill Long, Pat Karney, City of Las Animas and Bent County Road & Bridge crew!!

It was a white knuckle day but in the end Boggsville remains standing proud!  Many thanks to everyone in this effort!!
