Crowley County Sheriff VS Sugar City Election Chaos

I am addressing this letter primarily to the Citizens of Sugar City, though it applies to all of us. As your elected Sheriff I have certain statutory duties that I must fulfill. I take that responsibility very seriously. As your Sheriff I am daily pushed and pulled by mostly good meaning citizens who try to sway me into taking sides in matters that I cannot get involved in. Those matters are endless in variety and often quite contentious. I must wade through the issues and decide if I have any legal jurisdiction to get involved. An error in judgement can leave me liable.  Whatever decision I make will leave one side or the other upset.

As I write this letter the town of Sugar City is embroiled in a municipal election cycle that has devolved into chaos. I have received numerous calls trying to pull my office into the fray. I will not allow that. Public elections are sacred in this country. The process is often heated and occasionally becomes violent.  I cannot and will not take sides in Sugar City’s political battles. I will however keep the peace. As of today, one arrest has been made and hopefully that will be the only one.  I will personally examine each call for service and may decline to act based on my experience, and whether I deem the request to be politically motivated.

I look forward to Sugar City getting a new City Council in place and hopefully working together for the greater good.
