Position Overview: Mile High Youth Corps’ Eastern Plains Crew Leader positions require individuals who are skilled problem-solvers, experienced leaders, and positive role models. Crew leaders must possess a strong work ethic, promote high-quality performance in their crew, and devote themselves to field-based youth development. The position requires both leadership and technical aptitude, in addition to a high level of comfort in the outdoors. Crew Leaders will begin their term supporting planning and implementation of the Eastern Plains Land Conservation Summer of Service Program and completing technical training, then will transition to co-crew lead a crew of 8-10 Corpsmembers completing land conservation projects in the six-county region of Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero, and Prowers counties.

Position Type: Field-based, seasonal, exempt, 450-hour program commitment

Location: Crew Leaders will report to La Junta Armory, 103 Dalton Ave., La Junta, CO 81050. Crew Leaders will occasionally travel to Colorado Springs for training and MHYC all-Corps activities

Benefits: Stipend: $1,240 every 2 weeks

AmeriCorps Education Award: Earn an education award of $1,824.07 upon successful completion of a 450-hour term of service. This award can be used to pay tuition or pay back qualifying student loans. Individuals have 7 years to use the award.

Student loan forbearance: Possible through the National Service Trust on qualifying federal government student loans.

Position Dates: May 13, 2024 – August 21, 2024

Schedule: 40 hours per week, 4.5 day schedule: Monday-Thursday 7am-4:30pm; Friday 8am-12:00pm

Some camping may be required for up to 4 days at a time throughout the season (camping gear can be provided).

Mile High Youth Corps is a regional, non-profit, AmeriCorps (www.americorps.gov) affiliated organization that engages young adults in jobs that help the planet and provide pathways to a promising future. Corpsmembers serve on conservation and environmental stewardship projects while engaging in meaningful education activities.

Project Implementation

* Assist with recruitment of Corpsmembers through online postings, job fairs, community events, creation/distribution of recruitment materials, and talking to interested applicants.

* Plan, facilitate, and participate in national service days, all-corps service projects, community meetings, Community Project Week, and reflection/team-building activities.

* Develop and support programmatic educational schedules and activities, including planning and facilitating educational activities (EAs) and career readiness training (CRT) in the field.

* Participate in overall program planning and provide ongoing suggestions for improvement and design.

* Communicate effectively with project partners around project goals, asking clarifying questions when needed.

* Facilitate daily safety circles, goal setting activities, and project debriefs.

* Ensure timely, accurate, and quality completion of projects.

* Complete project photographs and gather required data for reporting for each project.

* Provide support including, but not limited to building, vehicle and tool maintenance. Corpsmembers may be responsible for additional camp chores and educational activities in the evening or morning when camping.

Corpsmember Development & Education

* Ensure Corpsmembers follow all MHYC policies and procedures; encourage a positive Corps culture.

* Provide daily support of the members of the crew including assigning, leading and instructing project tasks and training Corpsmembers in the development of technical and leadership skills.

* Plan and facilitate crew meetings and team-building activities.

* Provide support to Corpsmembers in the development of technical and leadership skills.

* Monitor and promote physical and mental wellness on and off the project-site.

* Provide consistent, ongoing informal feedback to Corpsmembers.

* Promote safe space for Corpsmembers to share near misses, injuries, etc., providing a positive safety culture.

* Support the retention of Corpsmembers through active mentorship, trainings, check-ins, and resource support.

* Oversee crew competitions including the safety competition and Summer Olympics.

* Oversee the near miss log, submits weekly updates with red flags from the near miss log to the Land Team, and has follow-up conversations with Corpsmembers when necessary.

* Support the Program Manager in identifying, procuring, and distributing resources to Corpsmembers.

General Qualifications:

* Must be physically fit, able to lift 50 lbs., spend 8-10 hours a day in all weather conditions (e.g., sun, heat, wind, rain, etc.), hike 7 miles with a day-pack, and be comfortable to be trained to use hand and power tools.

* Must be willing to camp up to 4 consecutive days in all weather conditions (rain, heat, etc.).

* Must have the ability to complete tasks in a detailed and timely manner, work independently, keep accurate records, and provide feedback to Program Manager.

* Must have strong communication and conflict management skills: ability to motivate others, organize and mentor a crew of young adults on projects, communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, co-workers, and supervisors, and ensure safe work practices.

* Must complete CPR and Wilderness First Aid training prior to the start of the field season. Training provided.

* At least one year experience working with diverse population of youth and staff in a team atmosphere is preferred.

* Prior outdoor and/or natural resources experience preferred

* Able to be on time and maintain consistent attendance throughout term of service. Must commit to completing the program.

Requirements:

* Must be between the ages of 21-24.

* Must be eligible for enrollment in AmeriCorps as a US Citizen, National or Lawful Permanent Resident. Documentation will be required on the first day. Must bring identification documents necessary to complete the I-9 and other forms on your first day.

* Must have valid driver’s license with insurable driving record and ability to drive a 12-passenger van to and from project sites with an attached trailer (training provided).

* Pre-service National Service Criminal History Check required

* Must not engage in any prohibited activities listed in the AmeriCorps member service agreement and must adhere to rules and regulations specified in the MHYC handbook.

* Must be a high school or GED/HSE graduate.
