Japanese Legacy Exhibit at The Rocky Ford Museum

The Rocky Ford Museum offers presentations on local history and culture during their Night at The Rocky Ford Museum series of exhibits and presentations. June's presentation was titled Japanese Legacy.

Sandie Dell and Rebecca Goodwin with the Otero County Historic Preservation Advisory Board spoke about Japanese Heritage in Southeast Colorado and its continued impact on local culture, this included dispelling several common misconceptions.

Japanese families moved to Southeast Colorado as early as 1902, had influence on the agricultural production in the area, and many arrived before Camp Amanche forced internment, according to Goodwin and Dell.

The event was well attended by the community. The museum will host the Japanese Legacy display through June and into the month of July.

The display features many items like family quilts and household items that reflect Japanese culture local to the Arkansas Valley.

Previous displays have included The Dry, and The Santa Fe Trail.

According to Museum Curator Rob Marshall, August's presentation will feature Sally Cope and the history of the Arkansas Valley Fair.

Previous Night at the Museum Presentations will soon be available to watch at the Rocky Ford Museum through collaboration with Consulting With A Hart LLC.

The museum is free and open to the public and accepts donations from its patrons to continue the preservation and retelling of Southeast Colorado history.
