Crowley County Sheriff Commits to Investigating Complaints of Municipal Overreach in Effort to Protect Citizens' Constitutional Rights

Those who have followed my posts since I returned home to the Crowey County Sheriff’s Office may recall that I have tried vigorously to remain separate from municipal government operations.

My office does receive complaints about municipal enforcement. Generally, they are frivolous in nature, just people upset that they are being held accountable, and wanting someone to complain to.

As I grow older and hopefully wiser, I am becoming more and more concerned about my duty to defend the constitutional rights of our citizens from government overreach.  That said I can no longer stand by and let the complaints go un-investigated. The people must have their voices heard, and someone who will listen.

I have therefore ordered my staff to take every complaint about municipal wrongdoing and investigate it based on its merits. This is in no way intended to undermine the authority of the municipal leaders or suggest any corruption or widespread wrongdoing.  It is intended to protect the people who feel their voices are never heard.

My oath of office is to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. I take that oath very seriously. Investigating Infringement of those rights is one of my primary duties.

My office has had to arrest and file criminal charges on municipal officials in the past. I hope that will not occur again. I will, however, serve all citizens of Crowley County equally, and investigate complaints equally regardless of title or status.

This decision no doubt will be met with animosity from some quarters. I cannot help that.

I hope the people understand my intention and will support me in my efforts.

I continue to hope that the Sheriff and municipalities can work together for the greater good.

Terry Reeves, Crowley County Sheriff
