Dear Editor:

Something I love about our community is how people rally together to help others in a time of need.  At Arkansas Valley Hospice, we have trained volunteers that are giving selflessly to help people live as fully as possible, even at the end of life.  We also have volunteers that give of their special talent to provide quilts and blankets for our patients.  There are also those that like to volunteer just for our events.  We are thankful for every one of them, and our community is a better, more compassionate place because of their service.

April 18 – 24 2021 is National Volunteer Week, and hospice volunteers make special moments possible for the patients and families they serve every day.  Across the U.S., more than 430,000 hospice volunteers give 19 million hours of service every year.  Every single volunteer deserves our appreciation and grateful acknowledgement.  Whether a volunteer is serving at the bedside, in the office, educating others, or raising awareness, they are the heart of hospice.

Being a volunteer for hospice is not entirely what you might think.  We have volunteers that help with administrative tasks, make meals for families, bereavement, fundraising and marketing as well as sit with patients to provide companionship, and caregiver respite.  We hold different community events throughout the year that people assist with.

Arkansas Valley Hospice welcomes people that enjoy planning, organizing, singing, networking, sewing, cooking, socializing, collaborating, and helping in any aspect.

That is why we, at Arkansas Valley Hospice, would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people that have dedicated their time and talents to us and celebrate our outstanding volunteers during this week.

I encourage others to learn more about hospice by contacting Arkansas Valley Hospice 531 Lewis in La Junta or call 384-8827. You could become our next volunteer!

Sincerely,

JoEllen Netherton

Volunteer Coordinator
