Joseph "Gibby" Harmes

May 17, 1954 - May 1, 2021

As the sun rose on May 1, 2021, our beloved “Gibby” was lifted up on Angel’s wings to his forever home in Heaven. Gib was born on May 17, 1954 in Gardner, Colorado. His love for the area was evident in how he respected the land, his friends, his home and his family; lessons he learned from his parents, Tony and Duby.

He attended school at Gardner and Walsenburg High School. He worked in the Denver area for a short while before the mountains of the Huerfano Valley called him home. He lived the remainder of his life in the place he loved.

Gib was employed by Huerfano School District RE-1 for 32 years. He began his career in Walsenburg working at John Mall High School, and he also worked at Washington School before he transferred to the Gardner School, where he finished his life’s work.

Gib’s commitment to the youth of Huerfano County was a great source of pride for him. He always said, “The school is my home. I keep it looking good for the kids. I feel proud when people say that the school looks great.” Gib is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy, his two sons Joseph and David, and his grandchildren Chloe and Tony.

He is also survived by his brothers Adam, Tony, Leroy, Tootie, and his sister Liola. He was also loved by Mickey (Sal), Mary Jo, Tony (Peggy), John (Tressa) Susan, Gina (Jess), Bobbie Jo (Ben), and Chuck Vialpando. Gib was an uncle to 64 nieces and nephews, which he loved as his own. He had many great nieces and nephews that filled him with much joy. Gib was blessed with many friends on this planet who will miss him. His dear friends Audra, Patty, and Dennis also will mourn the loss of his friendship. He is predeceased by his parents, Tony and Duby, his siblings Robert, Lydia, Cathy, his beloved sister Beckie who left us on March 24, 2021, Joe and Barbara Colistro, and Joe-Joe and Liz. We honor those who so loving helped the family during Gibby’s illness.

Sangre de Cristo Hospice provide us with so much support and love. His health providers, Kim and Linnie, made sure his wishes were honored, as they so lovingly cared for him. Our family and friends lifted us up in prayer daily and gave of themselves to help ease the struggles we faced. In honor of Gib’s memory, we would ask that you make a contribution to the Gardner School Foundation, the place he loved so much or to Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth. We will forever miss his smile, his love of an ice, cold Pepsi, and a good, close Bronco game. He was a man of virtue, honesty, and love. Words cannot express the depth of our loss.
