Obituary

Pamela Jean Griego, 73, of Rocky Ford, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2021 at her home.

Pamela Jean Griego, born November 1, 1947, to Barbara Hamper in Beatrice, Nebraska. She was adopted by Carroll Ginther. Pamela was raised in Bird City, Kansas, until the family moved to Swink, Colorado after her 8th grade year of school. She graduated from Swink High School in 1965.

In the late summer of 1965, she married William (Bill) Rocha in Syracuse, New York. They had one daughter, Daleen. While Mr. Rocha was in the service, they lived in Key West, Florida and San Angelo, Texas before settling in Denver. After they divorced, Pam and Daleen would move back to the Swink/Rocky Ford area to be near family.

Pam enrolled in classes at Otero Junior College and completed a secretarial certificate. She then began working at the La Junta Medical Center while helping her mother and stepfather, Buster Norris, bartending at Don’s Bar.

This is when she met Ignacio (Nacho) Griego. They began dating and would marry on June 10, 1974, in a civil ceremony at the Otero County Courthouse. They later renewed their vows in a church ceremony on June 12, 2011, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Rocky Ford.

Nacho and Pam purchased Don’s Bar and ran the establishment for approximately ten years. They loved to dance and entertain folks, many came long distances to enjoy the food and fun. Pam was an avid pool player and played for several years across the valley, winning several awards.

In November of 1983, Pam and Nacho decided to get out of the bar business and Pam obtained a position with the Rocky Ford Daily Gazette as the Circulation Manager and Receptionist. She loved working with the public and her carriers. She is well remembered by numerous carriers whom she supervised. Pam retired from the Gazette in 2012.

Pam and Nacho enjoyed camping and travelling. They were known to get lost down a rural road or two exploring different areas. Her number one priority was being a grandma. She loved attending her grandkids sporting events and other activities.
