Obituary

John Powell, 79, died on November 20th at the Bent County Nursing Home after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. As per John’s request cremation has taken place and a family celebration of life will be planned at a later date.

John was born in La Junta, Colorado on July 11th, 1942. He was a proud La Juntan with four generations of his family calling La Junta home. John was a leader in the Koshare Indian Dancers organization and earned his Eagle Scout during his high school years.

He was a master carpenter and entrepreneur who started his own construction company, JM Powell Construction, in the early 70's. Many of his homes and concrete work can still be seen throughout the Valley.

John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Peggy, two daughters and their spouses, Susan & George Perry of Oldsmar, Florida and Jennifer & Jeff Mitchell of Taylor Park, Colorado, two grandchildren, Sarah and Joshua Baker both of the Denver area. Close extended family include a niece and spouse, Charlee & Dennis Archuleta of Colorado Springs; and a nephew, Michael Owen and his daughter McKenzi of Oklahoma.

The family requests that anyone wishing to honor John's life or support the family please send donations to the Koshare Indian Dancers or Ark Valley Hospice in John's name.
