Otero College Student and Community Choir Presents: “It’s Beginning to Look Like Christmas” Dec. 6

LA JUNTA — Otero College is pleased to announce the reappearance of the Otero College Student and Community Choir in a concert of fun, popular holiday music!

This coming Monday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m., the choir will offer a program of light musical selections designed to entertain the audience and celebrate the season. Admission is free and the event will be presented in the Ed Stafford theatre at Otero College.

The concert opens with the mystical and mysterious The Darkest Midnight in December, a setting of a traditional Irish text accompanied with the sound of ethereal bells. Then the lively Antiphonal Deck the Hall rings out joyfully, setting up a mood of happy celebration.

Meredith Wilson’s It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas is sung in a swing style with a Rockettes’ kickline-type ending. Will Ferrel’s movie “Elf” has been turned into a Broadway musical and a medley of its rollicking, over-the-top cheery tunes follows.

Then take a trip down memory lane as the choir sings A Charlie Brown Christmas, featuring Vince Guaraldi’s jazzy score from the television special.

Two more meditative songs come next: December Rose showcases young local talent Christian Pumalpa-Smith on violin, and James Lind is guest conductor for the intimate and beautiful Noel.

A catchy soft-shoe style Marshmallow World partners the titular tune with “The Candy Man” melody from Gene Wilder’s original Willie Wonka movie. Holiday Road is a rocking song from “National Lampoon’s Vacation” movie and will feature Joe Borrego from Pueblo on guitar. The choir will use the silly, fun novelty song Ugly Christmas Sweater as a pretext for an onstage ugly sweater contest. Next comes This Christmastide, a warm and sentimental song that inevitably conjures forth childhood memories of the beauty of the season. Concluding the concert will be Five Favorite Holiday Songs, a medley of familiar tunes arranged in different styles from five successive decades: Jolly Old St. Nicholas (swing), Deck the Halls (doo-wop), Up On the Housetop (disco), and We Wish You a Merry Christmas (pop-rock anthem), all joined together with a snippet of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Dean Rees, Otero College Choir conductor, is pleased to announce the reappearance of the popular local girl-group Cherry and the Limeades, headlined by the talented Terry Miller. Five of the original six singers will perform Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You and Louis Armstrong’s goofy ‘Zat You, Santa Claus? And another small ensemble will feature soloist Mike Shima in A Doo-Wop Christmas with You.

Mr. Rees is very grateful for the enormously talented instrumentalists that will accompany: Sally Kappel (accompanist extraordinaire), Marie Mora-Menges (bass guitar), Joe Borrego (acoustic guitar), Christian Pumalpa-Smith (violin), and the fabulous Jordan Borrego from Pueblo (drum set and percussion).

The choir eagerly awaits Monday night and sincerely hopes that you will be able to attend this special event!
