Ty O’Connor Named Head Men’s Soccer Coach

LA JUNTA — Otero Athletics is extremely excited to announce the addition of Ty O’Connor as the new Head Men’s Soccer Coach. Coach O’Connor comes to Otero from Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) in Taylorsville, Utah and will begin on March 1.

Chris Carrillo, Otero Athletic Director said, “O’Connor is a very talented young coach that is coming from a history of not only great soccer but a commitment to excellence. He is truly committed to student athletes on and off the pitch. He believes in the development of not only great soccer players but even better people.”

While Head Assistant Coach at SLCC, O’Connor was also serving as the Men’s Soccer Academic Advisor where he helped students obtain degrees, built graduation plans, explained financial aid, and assisted in transfers.

Prior to his time at SLCC, O’Connor was the Head Assistant Coach at Lincoln Trail College. There, he helped build a brand new NJCAA Division 1 soccer program, all during the onset of the Covid19 pandemic.

He has knowledge about building training plans and fundraising for scholarships. O’Connor’s former coaching experience includes Granger High School in West Valley, Utah; Salt Lake City Football Club, coaching students aged 5-18; Pateadores Soccer Club in Huntington Beach, CA; and Corona Del Mar High School in Corona del Mar, CA.

Coach O’Connor has several championships to his name, both coaching and as a player. In his previous three seasons coaching, the SLCC soccer team finished as Scenic West Athletic Conference, Region 18 champions. In the previous two seasons, they were also West District champions. In 20-21 the Bruins won the NJCAA D1 National Championship and went all the way to the Final Four National Championships in 21-22.

As a player, O’Connor was selected to the PAC West All Conference Team, was selected as CCAA Defensive player of the year, he was on the runner up club for a national championship for u18 and won a club national championship for u17. O’Connor received a Bachelor of Arts in communications in 2019 and is finishing a Masters of Coaching and Athletic Administration to be conferred Feb. of 2022 from Concordia University of Irvine.

Carrillo shared, “Otero’s philosophy of ‘winning happens when good people and work ethic collide’ directly aligns with Coach O’Connor’s philosophy. When searching for our new head men’s soccer coach we were specifically looking for an individual that not only had the ability to excel the program, but also had the ability to provide a great overall experience for our student athletes, we feel we have found that in Coach O’Connor.”
