Otero County Commissioners Meeting September 21st

Commissioner Keith Goodwin reported that there had been some complications with covid reimbursement. The County contacted numerous state representatives to question DOLA's involvement, whereas they are funded through Colorado Counties Inc.

Goodwin said, "as of Friday, we were instructed to reapply and that the county will be paid."

Goodwin went on to say, we have shaken the tree we will have to see what falls out of that. Not every covid fund turns out with the silver linings as plans are not yet made and deadlines are encroaching. 

Our shaking of the tree is noticed, it is getting a reaction, and we are going to keep shaking the tree, Goodwin said.

New Business 

The Rocky Ford Annex building formerly housed the Otero County Extension Office, it is being painted.

The total interior painting was put out for sealed bid. The bids were presented to the board. 

The board passed a motion for the county to research the individual bids.

Otero County Commissioners Meeting seconews.org Otero County Economic Development Director, Danelle Berg reported that Otero Partners Inc. has all signatures to amend their Inter Governmental Agreement and new bylaws.

Further she reported an increase in businesses looking to relocate to our region. Economic Development is currently seeking buildings for them.

She also reported  that Otero Partners Inc. Is not a pass through for the cares act. Their offices have been receiving calls that should go directly to the county offices.

Public Works Director, Land Use Director Lex Nichols reported EPA did two residential property clean up assessments of houses that burned down, both tested positive for asbestos. One was located in La Junta and one was located in Rocky Ford. Clean up was finished on Saturday. Grant funds have been utilized because of the risk of asbestos as a public health hazard.

Nichols reported it was good progress and luckily the grant program went smoothly, everyone involved was good to work with.

County Clerk, Lyn Scott reported ballots are at the printers. She said the Ballot Tracks system will notify voters of their voting activities. If you would like to opt out contact the Otero County Clerks Office at 719-383-3020.

Ballots will be mailed out October 9th-16th, Scott said, "We have enough election judges...there was a good response from a state program, so we have back up judges if we need them"

Hostetler reported that OCLI conversations were focused on changes at the landfill.

Goodwin reported that he was very proud of the Otero County Department heads for their great job in handling their budgets as frugally as possible.
