Obituary

Funeral services for Olive Tomlin will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 23, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Las Animas, CO with Pastor Rod Coulter officiating.  Interment will follow at Fort Lyon National Cemetery.  Public is invited to join the family for a luncheon at the VFW Post #2411 following burial.

Olive Ruby Davis was born in Marion Township, Saginaw County Michigan, on November 9, 1931 to Olive Gertrude (Beckwith) and Fred Russell Davis. She passed away on December 18, 2019 at her home in Las Animas, CO at the age of 88.

Olive had three sisters and one brother. She attended schools there and graduated from Saginaw County High School.  Olive began serving others at a young age when she worked in her Mom’s restaurant.  Olive married Harold Fae Tomlin, World War II veteran, on October 3, 1950 in Toledo, Ohio.  Olive and Fae eventually settled near Las Animas, where Fae grew up, and their family continued to grow.  Olive not only raised her own large family near the Fort Lyon area and became a cancer survivor, she then worked hard cooking at the Alpine Inn dining room and bartending at the Copenhagen Inn.  As if that wasn’t enough, Olive became a nursing assistant at VAMC Fort Lyon and worked for eleven years until her retirement.  Olive was an excellent cook and excelled at taking care of others and loved the veterans she cared for.  In her golden years, Olive volunteered at the local nursing home to care for the residents there.  Olive and Fae were very active in several organizations, especially the Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary, becoming State Commanders together, and receiving many state and national awards for their service to veterans. Olive was always recognized as determined, hardworking, devoted and mission-driven, no matter the cause or job she was working on.  Olive was very outspoken on her beliefs and fought hard for veterans’ causes.  Olive was a life member of the Harold Fae Tomlin Disabled American Veteran’s Auxiliary #6; a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary #2411; a Life Member of the American Legion Auxiliary #151; and a Life Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary.  Olive had a full and great life - she did what she wanted, when she wanted!

Olive is survived by her sister, Mary Ellen Schneider, Casper, WY; children, Leldon (Carol) Tomlin, Walsh, CO,  Vickie (Neil) Briggs, Olney Springs, CO, LaVonne Garrison, Harold (Kathleen) Tomlin, Susan (Jerry) Miller, Vivid Tomlin, and Brenda Whattler, all of Las Animas, CO.  She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, Guy (Mattie) Tomlin, Mount Pleasant, Texas, Sherwin Buck (Pam) Barnes, Jerome, Idaho, and Bill Galbraith, Olney Springs; other family members and friends.

Olive was preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years, Harold Fae Tomlin; parents, Olive and Fred Davis; sisters, Lillian Thompson and Mabel MacLeod; brother, Bucky Davis; daughters, Shirley Yvonne (Tomlin) Copeland and Patricia Ann Tomlin; son-in-law, Randy Whattler; and great grandsons, Dominique John Paul Tomlin and Roland Wayne Tomlin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Horber Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 431, Las Animas, CO 81054 in Olive’s memory for a memorial bench project honoring the family.
