Vietnam Veterans Honored in Las Animas with Celebration

Sixteen volunteers from the community and Fort Lyon hung 190 patriotic Avenue of Flags in Las Animas early this morning, and then enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the VFW Post #2411. It was a chilly spring morning, and the wind was blowing a bit in the afternoon when 16 volunteers took them down. Hasty and McClave also flew their 28 Avenue of Flags with four volunteers.

At 9 am, Vietnam Veterans, family members, and community gathered for a home-cooked breakfast in their honor. Pam Valdez, Jr. Vice President and 50th Commemoration Chairperson, welcomed those attending and shared the history of National Vietnam Veterans Day. She awarded three Vietnam Veterans with their 50th Commemoration lapel pin. Pat Gonzales, Chaplain, gave the invocation and offered bibles to those attending.

God Bless America and America and America the Beautiful were sang and played by Janice Ramey and Lynette Wolfe.

Rick Ward, Bent County Service Officer, updated veterans about compensations available and the local VA Clinics. The missing man table was displayed, and a moment of silence was offered for those missing, KIA, and those who have died since the Vietnam War. Jess Garcia, VFW Post Commander and Kathleen Tomlin, Auxiliary President were thanked. 50 people enjoyed the event and 17 or those were Vietnam Veterans.

The VFW Auxiliary Committee consisting of Pam Valdez, Donna Dodson, Anisita MacLeod, Dianna Robinson, and Mauritta Adams, did a fantastic job of organizing the event and we thank them for that. Remember to thank a Vietnam Veteran and welcome them home. God bless our Vietnam Veterans, and God bless America!
