.......................School Track Meet Ends Due To Parent.....................

On today's date we received a call of person that was trying to run students over at the RE1 sports complex during a school track meet in a red Chevy truck.

While responding to the scene information was given that the suspect was now at the John Mall HS parking lot. The HS parking lot was cleared and we responded to the field where Sheriff Bruce Newman and K9 Sgt. Roman Hijar immediately took the suspect, Jose Luis Mendez (01/28/1981), into custody.

At this time Undersheriff Milan Rapo, Captain Craig Lessar, Captain Bill Lapote, Lt. Dee Pacheco and Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Albright began searching the area for any witnesses, victims, or further suspects.

One, uninjured victim was located who stated the same as the witnesses, Mendez became verbally aggressive and then attempted to run the victim over but was unsuccessful during an argument. There was no gun involved in this incident.

Mendez was arrested for several charges along with several out of County warrants.

At the beginning of this event The RE1 school district and the visiting schools took swift and concise action to protect the kids, a big KUDOS goes out to them!

"suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. "
