The Play That Goes Wrong Goes Hilariously Right on the Picketwire Stage

The Picketwire production of “The Play That Goes Wrong” opens Thursday, July 6th at the Picketwire Center for Performing and Visual Arts in La Junta (802 San Juan Ave). This Olivier award-winning comedy, is written by Henry Lewis, Henry Shields and Jonathan Sayer.

The “play within a play" is under the direction of Natalie Summers, in her directorial debut. It seems a difficult project for a first-time director, but Mrs. Summers matches the timing of the action and technical occurrences with perfection. The Assistant Director for this production is Natalie's Mother, Janet Golding.

The exceptionally clever set design is the star of the production and enables the story to develop. Sets are designed by Mrs. Summers and built by Cameron Salzbrenner, Scott Goheen, and the cast. The set is covered with booby traps of great imagination, leaving the audience to wonder “how did they accomplish that?" More amazing is wondering “how they can keep going?"

Costumes are designed by Natalie Ridgwell and Jenny Snyder. Zach Zamora worked his magic once again with the sound and lighting. Zoey Montoya serves as stage manager and runs a tight ship backstage to keep the action running smoothly.

The “Play That Goes Wrong” features a terrible fictional script, executed terribly by a terrible group of fictional actors. Thankfully, the fictional script is enveloped in a real-life, brilliant script that is executed brilliantly by a very real and very brilliant group of actors. Picketwire’s production of “The Play That Goes Wrong" will keep the audience laughing all night.

Within the play, the performances all go wrong; the scenery goes wrong, to catastrophic effect; even the sound cues go wrong. All told, “The Play That Goes Wrong” goes hilariously right – all while a murder is being solved.

The ensemble cast is headlined by veteran actresses: Molly Borton and Desiree Goheen. Their comedic timing is impeccable, only surpassed by their physical comedy. Ben Long acts as the inspector tasked to solve the murder, but has some twists and turns that leave the audience guessing.

New to the Picketwire stage is Jonah Langston who plays several parts. His interpretation and delivery of each character shows professionalism beyond his years. He would have been able to take on any character in a 1930 Noel Coward comedy. Demian Ryder plays the butler (well, it is a murder mystery), and Cody Rogers does not disappoint with his impish style, which makes the character’s storyline all the more surprising.

Rounding out the cast are Matthew Snyder (who acts in surprising ways throughout the play) and the pretend backstage crew: Rachael Berg, Dylan Kurtz, Kaydence Lagergren, Katie Merewether and Jeffrey Reed. Their contributions really make the action possible.

“The Play That Goes Wrong” will provide a fun, summer evening for audience members of all ages. It runs from Thursday, July 6th through Saturday, July 8th. Tickets can be purchased online at picketwireplayers.org or at the theatre (802 San Juan, La Junta, CO). All performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
