Otero College Welcomes Jada Walton as New Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach

LA JUNTA — On July 5, Otero College welcomed Jada Walton as the new Assistant Women’s Basketball coach. The Athletic department is excited to welcome her to campus.

Coach Walton earned a bachelor’s degree in human science from Texas Tech University and her graduate degree at Troy University in sports management. She is originally from Lithonia, Georgia.

Attending Texas A & M from 2017-2019, Coach Walton helped lead her team to two sweet-sixteen appearances, while also earning the team Academic Award her freshman year. From 2019-2021, she attended Texas Tech and was named team captain. At Troy University (2021-2023) she was able to continue playing while pursuing a master’s degree in sports management. She accomplished career highs in points, rebounds, and minutes. In the ’22-’23 season she was named team captain and received the female Heart of Warrior award.

Coach Walton shared, “At Otero, I plan to empower student athletes and help them get to a four-year university, mentor them, and create an overall winning environment on and off the court.” She also plans to help lead the women’s basketball team to a conference championship. When asked what she likes about Otero, she said, “I like the close-knit atmosphere here at Otero. I also like how peaceful and safe the community is. I like that they campus isn’t so big so I that I can build relationships with faculty in all departments.”

Head Coach, Kyle Herring speaks very highly of Coach Walton, “I am excited to have Jada join our program. She came highly recommended by a good friend of mine. She is very young in this business but her natural skills, work ethic, and ability to connect with other people quickly will help this team from day one.”

In her spare time, Coach Walton enjoys working out, shopping, sightseeing, and playing spades. She is excited about living in La Junta and looks forward to joining the community.
