22nd Annual Tri-County Family Care Center LEGO Building Trust Winners!

Tri-County Family Care Center Sponsored their 22nd Annual LEGO “Building Trust” contest on Sunday, August 19th , 2023, in the Exposition building, during the Arkansas Valley Fair. LEGO kits were provided free of charge for the participants to keep. LEGO kits have been used for the past several years. This activity encourages parents or other adult sponsors to interact and be involved with the youth.

The 37 teams with 74 people that participated included one child and one parent or adult sponsor and a couples’ division. The concept of the activity was to illustrate good communication skills and to build trust between the team members. There were 10 teams in the Junior Division (ages 5-8): winners for 1st place were Kaleb Myers and his mother Kaitlyn Myers, Rocky Ford; 2nd place were Wesley Garcia and his mother Shannon Garcia, La Junta; 3rd place were Elizabeth Baca and her father Evan Baca, Rocky Ford.

Fifteen teams were in the Intermediate Division (ages 9-12): winners for 1st place were Malachi Blackwell and his mother Michelle Blackwell, La Junta; 2 nd place winners were Koehn Lagergren and his father Eric Lagergren; 3rd place winners were Nicholas Martinez lll and his father Nicholas Martinez, Rocky Ford. Six teams were in the Senior Division (ages 13-17): winners for 1st place were Rosendo Maes and his mother Heather Maes, La Junta; 2nd place winners were Koby Coffey and his mother Crystal Coffey, Fowler; 3rd place winners were Zoa Sullivan and her father Taylor Sullivan, La Junta. Six couples participated with Daniel and Michelle Blackwell, La Junta, placing first.

Each age category was given a certain amount of time to build the kit. The adult had to instruct the child on how to build that particular kit, without the child seeing the picture or reading the instructions. Each team was judged according to how well they communicated and how much of the kit was completed during the time allowed. For the Senior Division (13-17), the child read the instructions and the adult put the kit together. The couples decided who would instruct and who would build.

Trophies for first, second and third places were given for each age category and each team received a participation ribbon. Each child participant entered the drawing for a grand prize of a Lego kit and a gift certificate to Taco Bell. This was won by Malichi Blackwell. Judges were Justin Quagliato, Claudia Budd and Don Sisneros. Event was facilitated by Sarah Dillon, Executive Director, Marcellia Lopez-Flores, Registration Clerk and Harriet Menning from Tri-County Family Care Center. The LEGO Building Trust contest had a successful 22nd year and we believe it is a great way to connect with your kids! For more information, call 719-254-7776.
