Obituary

John Russell Holcomb, entered into rest, January 5th 2024 in Las Animas, CO. John was born on August 5th, 1961 in La Junta, CO. John expressed an extreme amount of loyalty, charisma, dedication, occasional rebellion but above all he was a fierce friend. All of these characteristics are what made John unique in his own way.

John’s individuality flourished early on, music was his passion. This passion is what inspired him to pick up a guitar that he hardly ever put down or left without. His love for music kept him blind to reality when he was picking at his six string. Hours upon hours sitting and listening to the same song over and over again, until he perfected every note and tune that reached at his heartstrings. Moved by the lyrics and sounds produced by his favorite bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Def Leppard to name a few. This gave him motivation to start a band with a group of individuals that blossomed into friendship, connected by their love and enjoyment of music.

As his love for music, his devotion to his favorite Football team the Denver Broncos. His team left him an undying fan for life. From shirts, hats, jersey’s, mugs, as little as a Bronco gumball machine was enough to put a smile on his face and show nothing but gratitude.

Spending hours enthralled watching the game in person, with friends, family, at the bar or even at home, that didn’t matter to him. As long as he was able to clap and jump for joy at every touchdown was a victory to John.

Following in his mother Jeanne’s footsteps, John began working at the Bent County Hospital while in high school, caring for the residents. After graduating Las Animas High School as a Trojan in 1979, he continued his profession in the medical field, attending Otero Junior College. John’s commitment to his education and his admiration to help those in need was never ending. While still in college he worked long hours as a CNA for Fort Lyon, VA. Upon working at the VA, John entered into the Upward Mobility Program, which he took advantage of right away. This helped him advance in his career to gain his RN license. He continued working as an RN in the psychiatric ward until his retirement.

During retirement John loved spending time with kids and family. Taking long weekend camping trips to San Isabel or a family trip to his brothers property just outside of Blackhawk.

Hiking, campfires, and the hot springs were what he always looked forward to. However, talking around the campfire was what he enjoyed most. Fishing various lakes and rivers, golfing every course he could, and bowling when available were some of John’s other leisure activities that he cherished. John’s grandchildren were his new found love. Spending as much time as he could with them, waiting for them to grow up and teach them what he knew about all the things that he loved and had passion for.

John Russell Holcomb was preceded in passing by his eldest son Gerald Bradley Holcomb, his mother Jeanne Francis Holcomb, Father Gerald Lloyd Holcomb. He is survived by his daughter Tracy “Jeanne” Holcomb of Las Animas, CO. Sons Ian “Russell” Holcomb (Andrea) of La Junta, CO, Sean “Luke” Holcomb of La Junta, CO. As well as his grandchildren Bradley “John” Holcomb and Tyla “Rae” Holcomb. His Brothers Jeff Holcomb of Denver, CO, Sister Donna Lucero (Alex) of Las Animas, CO, Garry Holcomb (Natasha) of Erie, CO. In addition to his immediate family, he is also survived by several cousins and numerous nephews and nieces.
