Obituary

Longtime Las Animas, Colorado and Homelake, Colorado resident Joyce T. Kersey, 92, died January 16, 2024 at the Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte.

Joyce’s life began in Picher, Oklahoma on October 4, 1931, the daughter to Roy T. Stewart and Lottie Belle (Dean) Stewart. Joyce and her brother Monte and sister Sharon were raised in Las Animas, Colorado. Joyce was the mother to four boys: Thomas, Michael, Ronald, and Monte. She married her true love Delmer Ray Kersey on October 4, 1969, and to this union, their son Kevin Samuel was born. They enjoyed 31 years together until his death in September of 2000.

While raising a family, Joyce worked as a Secretary of Oakley Wade, Attorney at Law, and the remaining 30 years of her working career as a Secretary for the Fort Lyon Veterans Medical Hospital in Las Animas. Joyce was a natural at her job because of her very detailed mindset. She was also a lifetime member of the Friend’s Church in Las Animas.

After retirement, Joyce enjoyed spending her time reading, watching classic movies, playing BINGO, and visiting with friends and family.

In 2012, Joyce moved from Las Animas, Colorado to Monte Vista, Colorado to be near family. She found her new home at the Colorado State Veterans Center at Homelake. Joyce made it a point during the 12 years that she lived there to welcome the new residents to the Veterans Center with open arms.

She is survived by her children Michael (Vicki) Cleghorn of Pueblo West, CO, and Monte (Cindy) Cleghorn of Monte Vista, CO; her daughter-in-law Tonya Kersey; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister Sharon Thompson of Phillipsburg, KS, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her children Thomas Cleghorn, Ronald Cleghorn, and Sam Kersey, and her brother and sister-in-law Monte and Elaine Stewart.
