Bent County Sheriff Responds to BNSF Train VS Car Crash

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, at approximately 0659, deputies of the Bent County Sherilf's Office responded to Highway 50 at mile post 393 for a vehicle on the railroad tracks.

Upon arrival. deputies contacted the driver and assisted the driver with exiting the vehicle due to the vehicle sitting on the railroad tracks. BNSF was notified of a car on the tracks but, an east-bound train was too close to stop and collided with car.

There were no occupants in the vehicle at the time of collision. The vehicle immediately caught fire and was pushed to County Road 5.5 before the train was able to come to a complete stop.

The driver was transported by ambulance to AVRMC for injuries sustained in the original accident and not from the train collision. Las Animas Fire Department arived on scene and quickly extinguished the fire.

BNSF arrived on scene along with a tow truck. The car was successfully removed from the tracks and BNSF crews are assessing the track and train for damage.

Highway 50 was closed in both directions for approximately 30 minutes. Colorado State Patrol is conducting the accident investigation.
