CSP Reports: Fatal Crash Involving Three Vehicles in CDOT Work Zone on Highway 50 in Otero County

(Otero County, COLO) – As the investigation continues into this deadly crash, the Colorado State Patrol determined that there were three vehicles involved. The crash included a Saturn SL1 (Vehicle 1), an International 6x4 Workstar 7600 (Vehicle 2 - CDOT), and a Nissan Versa (Vehicle 3).

The driver of the Saturn (vehicle 1), a 34-year-old male out of Rocky Ford, suffered fatal injuries, and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the CDOT International Workstar, a 39-year-old male out of La Junta, was transported to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries. The occupants of the Nissan Versa, a 45-year-old female and 54-year-old male, suffered no injuries during the crash.

The initial investigation shows, the Saturn (Vehicle 1) was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 in the right-hand lane.

The CDOT International Workstar (Vehicle 2) was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 in the left lane.

The Nissan (Vehicle 3} was traveling eastbound in the right lane on Highway 50 in front of the Saturn (Vehicle 1).

The Saturn (Vehicle 1) made a sudden lane change to the left and the front end of his vehicle collided with the rear of the CDOT International Workstar (Vehicle 2).

After impact the Saturn (Vehicle 1) and the CDOT International Workstar (Vehicle 2) continue eastbound where they came to rest in the left-hand lane.

The Nissan (Vehicle 3) collided with some debris from the initial crash and continued eastbound coming to a controlled stop.

The vehicles were in an active CDOT work zone at the time of the crash.

Highway 50 is now open, however, this remains an ongoing investigation at this time.
