Passenger Fatally Struck After Jumping from Moving Greyhound Bus on Highway 287

Colorado State Patrol Releases Correction:

The initial release on this incident states the road was closed and gives an inaccurate location. 

Highway 287 was closed between milepost 31 and milepost 73 in both directions and reopened at 9:56 am.   

Colorado State Patrol: Alternate Crash Resulting in Fatal

(Prowers County, COLO) At 4:04 a.m. today, the Colorado State Patrol responded to a report of a passenger jumping out of a northbound Greyhound bus while the bus was in motion, resulting in the passenger being struck by a southbound semi truck on Highway 287 near milepost 68.

The passenger was pronounced deceased on scene. 

Prowers County Coroner Released the Following: On 12/5/2024 in the early morning hours, Coroner investigators responded south of Lamar on Highway 287 near mile post 70 for a passenger of a bus who jumped out of the window. Pedro Simon 26 of Denver was pronounced deceased on scene by a death investigator. Next-of-Kin has been notified.

Highway 285 was closed from milepost 31 (Springfield) to milepost 73 (Lamar) in both directions.

The long stretch of roadway was closed due to this area being mainly traveled by semi trucks. This is to allow semi trucks to pull over to park and wait for the roadway to open back open again.

The roadway opened back up a little before 10:30 a.m., according to the Colorado State Patrol.
